ZBrush Mouth Modeling!

Woho! Zbrush has started!

Ok so, we are one week into the zbrush course and I think it’s time I share my work progress. Our first assignment is to model mouths, ears, noses and eye’s, 3-sets of each.

Mouth 1

Starting of in zbrush I was very confused to how to do my work. Luckily some tutorials helped me get started. I started by choosing 3 images of people with different types of mouths to use as reference images when modeling.

This was my first reference:

I started of with a simple, low-poly shape. And simply tried to get the general shape of the mouth formed. This took me several hours! It may sound simple, but damn it can be hard to get right. When I felt happy I increased the sud-divisions and continued to perfect the shape of the mouth from there, going back and forth between looking at the reference image and the model.

The Tools I used while modeling was the move tool and the clay brush tool. The Move tool I found to be simplest to use in the beginning, and at the end of the modeling process. And in between I used a lot of clay brush to create the curves.

Here is the result of my very first creation in zbrush:

I’m quite happy with how it turned out.

Mouth 2

This is the reference image I choose for my second model:

Ref 2

I choose this one because of her unique size in lips and I though it would be fun to do.

I used the exact same process as I did the first time, except this time it went much faster because I had gotten used to the workflow. The hardest part about this one was in my opinion the keep the upper and lower lip close together. Every time I sub-divided I ended up with a bigger and bigger gap between the lips which made it look really awkward. So I ended up using the move tool to close the gap and used the clay brus for a lot of redefining.

Mouth 3

For the final mouth I choose one of my favorite actresses as reference, just because I love her mouth, Natalie Dormer. And I just wanna apologize to Natalie in advance because this, this didn’t turn out quite as I had planed.. Turns out she has some very tricky shapes to her.

For this one I actually took some wip pictures to show the progress of my workflow. I started of trying to create the general shape. Then after the first sub-division I tried to create that un-symmetric smirk that she has, which of course was the trickiest part of this entire model. I ended up using the move tool a lot here on the higher sub-division levels, doing small changes all the time to get as close as I could to the reference image. But in the end I wasn’t really sure what I hade created xD

Well, that’s it for the first week! Turns out ZBrush is really cool. Next up is Noses!

Assets

Somnium – (Late) 2nd Update

Here’s another late update! (oopsie)

During the second week of production i created some asset for the game. Since Olivia is walking through her dreams, we wanted to fill the world with objects that are weird and out of place. As well as objects that represents Olivia as a character.

When creating the first batch of assets I would just look at an image of an object I found online and try to recreate that thing. This might not have been the smartest choice since we were very early in development, and we didn’t really know what we wanted in the game. So some assets like the well and the stump ended up not getting used at all. The mistake I did was that I was so eager to create assets for the game that I didn’t really take into consideration that we might want to create some concept art first.

Our workflow was chaos in the beginning of the project since we really hadn’t decided on how we would do things at this point. But now we always do concept art first and then discus on what to actually put time into creating.

Holy shit more blog updates!?

Somnium – (Late) 1st Update

So ok, I actually have no idea which production week we are currently in. But here comes my first update on what I’m currently working on for our game Somnium.

(Update)

This is what i worked on during the beginning of the project. Our main character Olivia needed some walking animations, and it was up to me as lead animator for this project to make them! Our plan at this point was to have two different versions of her walk, one where she was walking in the good dream and one version for the bad dream. The difference between them where that one would play when she was feeling happy and safe, and the other one when she was feeling unease and scared.

Here’s what the first version of her scared walk looks like:

Garbage I know. But at least it was something.

(Update)

Since this was an animation I created at the beginning of the project, we weren’t sure if it was ever going to be used. Turns out it wouldn’t, haha.

But no worries! The animation was shit anyway and way to slow! I learnt from my mistakes and the future animation updates will be way more awesome for me to show you.
